A man accused of stealing jewels from an 83-year-old woman on her hospital deathbed was remanded in police custody yesterday after a brief court appearance.

Marcos Marinoni, 26, was arrested Saturday near Keele Street and Finch Avenue West in the theft from Toronto East General Hospital. Police said they were flooded with tips after releasing surveillance images showing two suspects leaving the hospital.

Before his arrest, Marinoni was taken to hospital Sunday suffering from “facial injuries, acquired prior to coming into Toronto police custody,” said Staff Sgt. Mike Cannon.

No injuries to his face were visible in court yesterday, but a hospital ID bracelet was still on his wrist. His next court appearance is scheduled for Friday.

Det. Christopher Higgins said the victim’s family had just left her bedside to get some coffee when the robbers struck last Tuesday. The family alerted police when they returned and noticed some misplaced items.

“These were family heirlooms ... a gold necklace, a diamond ring,” Const. Tony Vella said. “They were obviously upset.”

By the time police arrived around 8:45 p.m., the woman had died. She was suffering from brain cancer.
