Accused silent in stabbing trial

A man accused of stabbing a woman to death in a seventh-floor apartment on Riverside Drive Saturday appeared in court yesterday.

Wearing an untucked blue dress shirt and standing with his arms in front of him, Tamrat Gebere, 35, scanned Courtroom 6, but didn’t speak during his brief appearance in which he was ordered by the judge not to have contact with an 18-month-old child and another person.

Gebere, who was charged with second-degree murder after the death of a woman, was remanded into custody following the appearance.

His next appearance is in Courtroom 5 on July 26 by video.

Police were called to 1541 Riverside Dr. Saturday afternoon. The Ottawa police major crime section said the death appeared to be a domestic homicide. Police have not released the identity of the woman pending notification of next of kin, but she is believed to be Gebere’s wife. An autopsy was conducted yesterday.

Gebere’s lawyer is Stuart Konyer, but lawyer Samir Adam, who appeared on his behalf yesterday, said because it was “such a recent event” and “a serious situation,” he couldn’t comment further.
