Ad campaign aims to reveal reality of gang life

Abbotsford police have launched a new campaign to show the hard truth about gang life.

Timed to coincide with the start of the school year, Operation Tarnish: Taking The Shine Off The Gang Lifestyle is meant to prevent youngsters from being lured to a life of gangs and drugs. One of the main components of the campaign is a series of posters modelled after Health Canada’s warning labels — like the ones on cigarette packs. Each poster contains a serious graphic and an engaging phrase using language familiar to youth.

In May, the Abbotsford police chief, mayor and chair of the board of education issued a public warning to youth involved in crime, specifically drug dealing and the gang activity, that they were putting their lives at risk.

It followed the targeted killing of two low-level drug dealers aged 19 and 21 in that community.

They were apparently killed because of their association with the Red Scorpions gang.
