Adding a little Jully to the mix

Canadian Idol is adding a little spice to the show with the addition of Toronto-based singer/songwriter Jully Black to its cast roster.

Yes, it’s true. Black, who has been part of the eTalk team as a celebrity reporter, is joining host Ben Mulroney and judges Jake Gold, Farley Flex, Sass Jordan and Zack Werner this season on Canadian Idol.

Black will be taking the singing competition to another level, giving viewers at home the insight on what happens backstage after the lights go down.

“I’m kind of the one that’s just bringing in a perspective. I’m the alternate eye, I’m letting people know what it’s like behind the scenes,” Black tells Metro in an exclusive interview. “I’m bringing a level of comfort to the contestants where they can just come and talk to me as a friend, as a musician, as someone who’s been through it.”

As one of Canada’s top R&B artists, Black plans on bringing her expertise to the table to help the competitors any way she can.

She’s definitely not a judge, and knowing what it’s like to be judged she will be offering words of wisdom, comforting them or just lending them another ear.

“I’m a bit of a friend to them, and I’ll just be bringing experience, the experience of actually taking the 10 to 15 years to do it the traditional, the conventional way,” says Black.

“Just letting them know the mandate when I speak to all the people auditioning so far, let them know that Idol gives you a chance. It doesn’t guarantee you a career — your career is what you make of that chance.”

A prime example of past contestants who didn’t win the title but have built their success after the show is Jacob Hoggard, lead singer of Hedley, who was in Season 2.

And if we look at our neighbours across the border, Grammy winner Jennifer Hudson has accomplished much herself and so has Chris Daughtry, lead singer of Daughtry.

“It’s what you make of that moment,” says Black.

The Canadian Idol audition tour will be making its final stop in Toronto Saturday and Sunday, April 12-13, at Yonge-Dundas Square from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
