Advance voting gets underway

Advance voting began yesterday in the mayoral race.

The city has implemented advance voting in response to poor turnout in the 2007 election, in which only about a quarter of eligible voters cast a ballot.

“(The purpose is) to offer as many opportunities as possible for people to vote,” said election director Stephen Thompson.

“They include continuous advanced voting and ward advanced voting until Saturday, and institutional advanced voting on Saturday to accommodate senior citizens who might not be able to access voting stations regularly.”

Voting at city hall runs until Oct. 16 (except Thanksgiving Sunday and Monday), while voting in each ward will take place Oct. 9 and 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“It was easy, they were helpful, fast and organized,” said voter Sonya Kunkel.
