Negotiations for a new contract between Alberta’s nurses and their employer are off to a rocky start.

The nurses’ union says in a release that the opening proposal from Alberta Health Services asks for cuts in salaries, benefits, safe-care provisions and scheduling protections.

AHS tabled an initial offer that respects Alberta’s nurses and also recognizes the fiscal realities of the health system, it said yesterday.

“The offer on the table raises a number of issues for discussion between the bargaining teams.

These are early days of negotiations and we will not be negotiating in the media,” says Shannon Larkins, spokesperson for AHS.
