Aide talks on nursing homes

Brian Mason, Alberta’s NDP leader, was joined by Loretta Raiter, a retired health-care aide, at the legislature to talk about the impact of cuts to nursing homes on residents Thursday.

“The nursing home has now become like a warehouse,” Raiter said, describing how residents are rushed throughout the day. “The human contact is not there anymore.”

She noted that new residents are younger than before, some with deadly diseases, and staff are needed to take care of them.

“There was a ratio some days that you had 10 to 16 residents to take care of,” Raiter said.

“There was no way that you could properly do the work that was required in that eight-hour period.”
