Attention to detail paid off for three members of the Calgary Police Air Support Unit honoured with international awards.

Const. Tat Ng and Capt. Cam Dutnall received the first-place 2009 Forward Looking Infrared Vision Award from the Airborne Law Enforcement Association for locating a suspect using infrared technology.

“It makes me feel very proud that a little place like ours can beat out some of the massive organizations we were up against in the United States,” said Dutnall.

In July 2008, Ng and Dutnall responded to a report of a stolen vehicle that had almost hit an officer at a check stop.

The driver fled the vehicle and HAWC1 searched for him. Dutnall said they were circling around for 20 minutes before Ng picked up a quick flash of heat from the infrared scanner, and city police K-9 units later arrested the man.

Engineer Greg Solar was awarded the Senior Officer’s Compliment from the commanding officer and the ALEA Technical Specialist of the Year for finding engine problems that could have had catastrophic effects for HAWC2.
