Airport tunnel project put on hold

It’s on to the much less desirable Plan B for the airport tunnel.

There will be no airport tunnel for the city — not until at least 2015, Ward 3 Ald. Jim Stevenson said after the airport authority agreed to put $10.5 million towards a bypass road and keep space on either side of the runway for future construction.

“It’s very disappointing but I don’t know what else to do … I’ve pretty much used everything in my bag of arsenal and there is nothing else I can do,” the embattled alderman said.

“I think it’s too bad we have let the taxpayers down by not planning and just reacting to the growth. And now it’s going to cost a lot more money this way.”

But success, Stevenson added, lies within the 25-km and 30-km space on each side of the new runway the airport authority pledged to allow for the potential tunnel to be built afterwards.

“I don’t know if I will still be around when that happens,” Stevenson said.

Barlow Trail is scheduled to be shut down by April 2011.
