Alberta government plans to expand its emergency warning system

Alberta’s emergency public warning system will soon include text messaging on mobile phones and pop-up windows on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, the government announced Monday.

The province will also “take advantage” of new technologies such as satellite radio and TV to alert residents during disasters and AMBER alerts, Municipal Affairs Minister Ray Danyluk announced as he kicked off Emergency Preparedness Week.

“We want to take the system into the next level of alerting by incorporating new technology and platforms,” Danyluk said in a press release.

“This will make a good system even better and ensure our communities are safe and strong for today and tomorrow.”

The new system is expected to be in place by mid-2010.
