You don’t have to go to the Vancouver Olympics to see Olympic athletes.

Several World Cup events are being staged in Alberta over the next several weeks. Many will feature athletes from around the world competing for spots in the Games.

Admission is free for some events. Check websites for details.

Here’s a list:

• Men’s downhill and super G ski events will be held Nov. 28-29 at Lake Louise, while the women’s races are on Dec. 4, 5 and 7.

After the races, check out the Winterstart Festival in Banff and Lake Louise.

• The Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings, Dec. 6-13 at Edmonton’s Rexall Place. Will determine which men’s and women’s curling teams will represent Canada at the Winter Games.

• The Essent ISU Speed Skating World Cup, Dec. 4-6 at Calgary’s Olympic Oval, with expected stars including Canadians Cindy Klassen and Jeremy Wotherspoon.

• Mogul and aerial action at the freestyle skiing Grand Prix and FIS World Cup, Jan. 8-10 at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary.—calendar.htm.
