Alberta’s top doctor is hoping a new plan will drop the number of Syphilis cases back to zero after seeing huge increases in the past decade.

Dr. Andre Corriveau is rolling out a plan to reverse Alberta’s cases of the sexually transmitted infection back to zero since skyrocketing to 263 cases in 2009 — seven per cent more than the year before. In 1996, there were zero cases of the infection in the province, according to officials.

Alberta Health and Wellness spokesperson John Tuckwell said the province is targeting the outbreak and said they are working with Alberta Health to unroll a complementary plan in the near future.

“We’re certainly aware of the problem and we are working on reversing it,” Tuckwell said.

Corriveau is putting the finishing touches on a report regarding the issue.
