Alderman claims post in uncontested election

A Calgary alderman has won by acclaimation the nomination in a provincial riding recently left vacant by former MLA and deputy premier Ron Stevens, the head of the nominating committee for the riding told Metro.

Bill Love confirmed that Calgary city council Ward 13 alderman Diane Colley-Urquhart won the nomination as no other candidates stepped forward.

“I know that there were others that were maybe looking at it, though I must tell you that no one else contacted me or picked up papers other than Diane,” Love said.

“We hoped that we would have three or four candidates and that it would really spark some interest, but that didn’t happen.”

Love said Colley-Urquhart was expected to speak to party faithful at a constituency meeting Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Haysboro School.
