Alderman or councillor? What’s in a name?

Calgary’s aldermen may soon have a new title as city council prepares to vote on the change at today’s meeting.

Calgary’s aldermen may soon have a new title as city council prepares to vote on the change at today’s meeting.

Ald. Shane Keating along with Ald. Dale Hodges have put forward a motion to change the title to councillor — a debate that has come to council before.

Keating said if the motion passes there would be minimal cost to the city.

“All the signs at city hall that are presently there that are usually changed at election time will stay exactly as they are,” he said, explaining the new title would be phased in over the next three years as new signage, business cards, etc. are needed.

Ald. Gael MacLeod said it doesn’t bother her as a female to be referred to as an alderman but said she will support the change.

“I’ve had so many emails to alder-woman, alder-person, alder-gal, alder-folk,” she said with a laugh. “I think it’s time and it just makes life easier.”
