Alfie ambushed with honour

Recovering from a leg injury from Monday’s game, Daniel Alfredsson was surprised with an award for his commitment to the community earlier this week.

Media personality Karen Soloman presented the Sens’ team captain with the United Way Community Builder Award for 2010 at Scotiabank Place during a practice.

“It’s a very nice surprise. I had no idea about this. That’s not what you’re looking for when you’re getting involved in charity,” said Alfredsson of the unexpected announcement.

Alfredsson helped raise over $10.1 million for mental health research, said Soloman, and his involvement in the community will help those struggling with mental illness to speak up and be heard.

“I find being here for a long time now that this is a community that definitely supports each other, and I’m obviously very honoured to get this award,” said Alfredsson.
