All but bikes, wheelchairs banned

TransLink has released a list of personal transportation devices banned on Metro Vancouver’s transit system, and unless it’s a run-of-the-mill bicycle or a wheelchair, it’s probably not allowed on board.

Motorized, tandem and recumbent bikes, bikes with trailers, Segways, and tricycles are among the devices not allowed on the system, which includes buses, SkyTrain, SeaBus and the West Coast Express.

“Safety is the main reason for the restriction,” said TransLink spokesperson Ken Hardie in a release. “Bicycles can be controlled fairly easily by the user.”

“Larger vehicles … are more cumbersome and can be dangerous if the train has to make an emergency brake.”

An exception is made in the case of mobility devices for people with disabilities — like scooters and power chairs — which are built for stability and can be secured.
