Three people have made their first court appearance in what Edmonton police say may be the city’s first case of human trafficking.

Mei Fang Chen and Xiu Zheng Chen, both in their early 30s, and Qui Wang, who is 41, face numerous charges that include living off the avails of prostitution and keeping a common bawdy house.

They are scheduled to return to court Sept. 29 for a bail hearing.

Police have said they got word earlier this month that a suspected prostitution-related business was operating in a massage and health spa outlet.

Investigators later learned that three women who were also taken into custody during a search of the business were allegedly victims of human trafficking.

The women were placed in the care of a non-profit agency.
