Amherst mayor will discuss gas woes with Dexter

Amherst Mayor Rob Small is going to get his audience with the premier.

Amherst Mayor Rob Small is going to get his audience with the premier.

After sending an email requesting a meeting with Premier Darrell Dexter, the mayor has been told a get-together will now happen.

“We are certainly welcome to meet with the mayor and are working on that,” the premier’s spokesperson Jennifer Stewart said. “We are not sure when or where that will happen, but we are definitely open to meeting with him and discussing this issue.”

Small issued the invitation to meet last week after the second Amherst gas station in a month announced it would be shutting its doors at the end of the month.

The reason given by both stations was an inability to compete with gas stations across the border in Aulac and Sackville, N.B., where pump prices are four to eight and sometimes 10 cents a litre cheaper for regular self-serve gasoline.

“I’m hoping they have some ideas on how they may be able to help this area,” the mayor said.
