Even though kids will be out of school this summer, that doesn’t mean they should stop reading.
The TD Summer Reading Club was launched at the Stanley A. Milner Library yesterday to promote reading throughout the summer months while kids are out of school.
Students from St. Catherine Elementary Junior High School were at the launch, and got to watch and participate as award-winning illustrator Stéphane Jorisch demonstrated illustrations from his book Destination Jungle.
“Reading is a lot of fun for the kids, it’s free,” said Kathleen Pine, manager of the youth services division for Stanley A. Milner Library.
“And from a parent’s point of view, there is a lot of research evidence that indicates children who are reading over the summer months will not lose the reading skills that they have worked on throughout the school year.”
The program is particularly targeted for ages five-12, but there is no limit on the age of the children that are able to participate, and even junior high school students are welcome to attend.
“From a banking point of view, if someone is literate, can read, gets the right job, has more discretionary income to spend, more money saved, more money to deposit into a bank account, and more money to have an increased quality of life in Canada,” said Alan Convery, manager of community relations for the TD Bank Financial Group.
