Another inmate freed by mistake

The Justice Department is dealing with another inmate being mistakenly released from prison.

Vernon Martell, 41, was still at large last evening after being mistakenly released from custody on Friday. He was serving 84 days in jail at the Central Nova Correctional Facility in Burnside for theft under $5,000 after breaching the conditions of his sentence.

But the Justice Department said last night in a release “clerical errors within the court administration process” resulted in him being set free.

“It’s an error that is concerning to the department,” said spokesman Bruce Nunn. “(This is the) second mistake release of this type this year and that’s too many.”

Nunn said they realized the inmate was missing Monday afternoon and Halifax Regional Police were contacted.

Police spokeswoman Theresa Rath said they spoke with the wanted man by phone on Monday evening and he committed to turning himself into police yesterday, but it didn’t happen.

“We are now in the process of checking known addresses or places he may frequent,” Rath said last night.
