Nearly 200 fifth graders and their parents crowded the Plaza 500 Hotel yesterday to try to win a spot on the game show Are You Smarter Than A Canadian 5th Grader?, which airs on Global TV in October.

Five clever 9- and 10-year-olds from across Canada will be picked to take part in the show’s kids panel. They’ll use their smarts to help adult contestants answer questions taken out of Elementary School textbooks. The adults compete for prizes of up to $1 million while the children are paid for their participation in the show.

“We’re looking for energetic, enthusiastic and articulate kids,” said Aviva Frenkel, the casting producer for the show. “We want to form a typical classroom, with a class clown and a class leader.”

Rachel McDaniel, 9, hopes that she might be the one to represent Vancouver in that classroom. The Hollyburn Elementary student was one of the Top 10 contestants in the CanWest CanSpell spelling bee, where she competed against students in Grade 8.

“Participating in the audition was fun,” she said. “The questions were to my expectations, I only didn’t know the French ones.”
