A paranoid schizophrenic man found guilty of killing an Ottawa sports broadcaster in 1995 will be held without bail at least until a detention hearing on Friday, an official in the Erie County Sheriff’s Office records department said yesterday.
Jeffrey Arenburg, 51, is accused of punching a U.S border officer in the face, sending him to hospital for treatment of a cut lip.
Arenburg had been deemed not criminally responsible for killing sports broadcaster Brian Smith, a former NHL player, in August 1995. After Smith’s murder, Arenburg spent nine years in a mental institution. He was released last year. U.S. border officials said that on Thursday, Arenburg told officers he was going shopping in the Buffalo area. However, document checks revealed that Arenburg had been denied entry to the U.S. several times previously because of his criminal record, the officials said.
