Arsonist may have burned himself: RCMP

An arsonist may have unintentionally set himself alight when he torched an Irish pub in Chilliwack, RCMP said Saturday.

“He may have sustained burns and may seek medical attention for those burns,” Const. Lea-Anne Dunlop said in a release.

An accelerant, like gasoline, was used to start the fire at Corky’s Irish Pub, and burned clothing was found discarded in the parking lot.

The fire was set between 3:40 and 4 a.m. Saturday through a second-storey window in the alleyway beside the pub. No one was inside at the time and sprinklers limited damage to the upstairs rear of the pub.

Dunlop said the motive for the arson is not known, but there was no evidence to link the arson to the Bar Watch Program.

Last month, half a dozen bullets were shot into the front entrance of a Chilliwack Earls Restaurant. A warning to Bar Watch members was painted on the back wall of the restaurant.
