Ashley living large on the ice

He may be the shortest player on the Halifax Mooseheads’ roster, but Darcy Ashley skates tall.

He may be the shortest player on the Halifax Mooseheads’ roster, but Darcy Ashley skates tall.

The Brooklyn, P.E.I., native went into the holiday break third in team scoring and second amongst rookies with 12 goals and 15 assists for 27 points in 36 games.

He has four goals and three assists in his past four games and is just starting to find his groove.

“The last little bit I’m starting to feel more comfortable and being more involved in the games as far as offensively and defensively,” he said.

“I’m getting used to the pace of play, and what to expect every night … It just took a while to adjust.”

Team information shows Ashley to be the shortest and lightest player on the roster, but he says the 10 pounds he’s packed on since he got here has pushed him ahead of a couple of players in the weight department.

“You’ve got to use it to your advantage,” he said of his size. “It’s good in some ways — harder to hold onto, you can be shiftier and stuff when you’re playing down low, and you’ve got the advantage of being a little quicker than a lot of those big guys.

“Sometimes you take a bit more abuse, but I think that’s what makes the game fun a lot of times, that challenge.”
