Asphalt plant goes up in flames

Fire crews battled a three-alarm blaze at the Volker Stevin yard in the city’s northwest yesterday morning.

Over 30 firefighters responded to the blaze just after 8 a.m. Officials say the blaze may have started on a conveyor belt and then spread at the yard, located at 69 Street and 112 Avenue NW.

Jim Fairweather lives a quarter-mile from the yard and said he heard an explosion in the morning.

“I didn’t really think anything of it until I opened my door and saw all of the black smoke coming out of the building,” he said. “It’s not something you expect to see on a Sunday.”

EMS spokesperson Stuart Brideaux said paramedics were on scene as a precaution because of the heat the firefighters were dealing with, but there were no injuries from the fire.

“It’s a hot day and a hot fire and then you have the equipment on, and it just can get really hot for the firefighters,” he said.

There are no damage estimates yet. Officials continue to investigate.
