Assault charge laid on Calgary police officer, says official

Charges against a Calgary police officer were laid yesterday regarding an on-duty incident that took place more than two years ago.

The officer, whose name has not been released, has been accused of hitting a man in the face and is charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm, said acting Supt. Kathy Grant.

The incident took place on May 28, 2008, when the officer was administering an Intoxilyzer test to the alleged victim following a minor collision in which the man was involved. “During this test, it is alleged that the situation escalated and the officer struck the man,” said Grant.

“Right now this member is currently assigned to administrative duties until this goes through court.”

Grant would not elaborate on what caused the altercation but said the Edmonton Crown Prosecutor’s Office reviewed the complaint and advised the charge against the nine-year veteran.
