Attack on elderly shop owner probed

As worry settles into the hearts of residents in the downtown core, police are trying to enlist the public’s help to establish a timeline surrounding a vicious attack on an elderly Edmonton pawn-shop owner.

The 75-year-old man suffered substantial injuries to his head and upper body Monday afternoon after being beaten with a hatchet. He lay on the floor behind the counter for an undetermined amount of time before being aided by patrons.

Det. Rob Paton said the location of the business made visibility of the front entrance more difficult. Surveillance footage from the store was not available as the camera was malfunctioning at the time.

“We are looking for any information no matter how trivial,” said Paton.

There is still no suspect description at this time.

Police ask that witnesses call the complaints line at 780-423-4567 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
