Attempted murder charges laid against Calgary mom

Police have charged a local mother with attempted murder in connection with her five-year-old son’s injuries stemming from an incident last week.

On May 27, police were called to the Alberta Children’s Hospital for reports the child was in medical distress. The victim arrived at hospital with his mother and was experiencing difficulties breathing and was struggling to stand up, police said in a release.

Officials said the symptoms appeared to be more consistent with trauma than an illness. The Child abuse Unit immediately took over the case to mental health concerns and the child’s mother was taken into custody, police said.

The 32-year-old woman was officially charged on June 1 with attempted murder, choking with intent and failing to provide the necessities of life.

Police didn’t release any other details because the case is before a court and her name will not be released to protect the identity of her child.
