VANCOUVER, B.C. - B.C. Hydro is seeking a nine per cent rate increase.

Utility spokeswoman Susan Danard says the Crown corporation will ask the B.C. Utilities Commission to approve the boost. She says the increase is modest and will add about seven dollars to the average customer's monthly bill.

If approved, the rate hike would take effect in April and Hydro intends to use the additional revenue to pay for infrastructure upgrades.

Announcement of the proposed increase came one day after B.C. Hydro released its third quarter statement showing consolidated net income of $113 million for the period ending December 31.

That is $45 million dollars lower than the same period one year earlier.
