B.C. Place to get retractable roof after Games

B.C. Place will be fitted for a retractable roof, but the 2010 Opening Ceremonies will still be held under the current Teflon covering.

The announcement is expected at a press conference this morning involving Premier Gordon Campbell and representatives from the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Campbell will say that a retractable roof is coming, but with the 2010 Olympics looming, there isn’t enough time for a full replacement. Meanwhile, the 25-year-old inflatable roof will be refurbished.

A second announcement about B.C. Place inheriting another tenant is also expected, according to Vancouver-based communications consultant Tom Mayenknecht.

The Vancouver Whitecaps will declare their formal intention to apply for a Major League Soccer franchise, which will require them to play under the dome until the issue of a waterfront stadium is resolved.
