Baby can still be reclaimed

The parents of a newborn baby recently dropped off at St. Paul’s Angel’s Cradle could reclaim the baby if they have a change of heart in the next six months, according to the Ministry of Children and Families.

The two-day-old infant is the first to be put in the bassinet — which allows mothers to anonymously give up unwanted babies — since the drop-off facility was launched at St. Paul’s Hospital in May.

“Hospitals must notify the Ministry of Children and Family Development that a child has been abandoned,” said Kelly Gleeson, Ministry communications director.

“The Ministry becomes the legal guardian of the infant.”

The birth mother has six months to come forward and ask for custody — if she wants it.
She would have to provide DNA to prove maternity.
