Banff RCMP have arrested a homeless man in connection to a recent sexual assault.

A 38-year-old man, of no fixed address, was arrested in Banff without incident for the July 12 attack.

He's charged with committing a sexual assault causing bodily harm.

The man is known to police, however he does not have any previous convictions for similar offences.

Police say the suspect was involved in a serious sexual assault last Sunday at about 2:30 a.m. on Squirrel Street in Banff.

The victim was walking on the
low-traffic residential street in Banff, when she was attacked suddenly
by a male assailant. Police say she was seriously beaten in the head and
face area as well as sexually assaulted before a witness interrupted
the assault.

With the assistance from the victim and witness statements, an accurate composite sketch was composed.

"Surveillance videos from the surrounding area were reviewed and after a thorough analysis of all of the information, the police were able to track down the person believed responsible for this heinous crime," the RCMP said in a release.

The female victim remains in hospital, recovering from minor injuries.

Banff RCMP are asking that any one with information on this incident to contact the Banff RCMP at 403-762-2226.
