Last night investigators refused to discuss any possible motives for Consuelo Valencia-Russo’s death, but it appears the single mother’s debit and credit cards had been stolen. Shortly after her missed hair appointment, hundreds of dollars were withdrawn from Valencia-Russo’s bank account. The account was accessed again later that day and a smaller amount was removed.
One police source confirmed the account was again accessed Wednesday, this time from outside the country, believed to be Mexico. Investigators are now reportedly analyzing surveillance footage from a North York bank to see if Valencia-Russo made the withdrawals herself.
At the victim’s home last night, Toronto Coun. Cesar Palacio broke down in tears. “We were going to have (a press conference) at 7 p.m., but it was too late,” he said. “We were praying she would come home safe.”
Palacio is the father of Valencia-Russo’s 14-year-old son, Nicholas. The teenager was the result of a brief relationship 15 years ago, but Palacio has been a part of Nicholas’ life. In fact, last Saturday, the Ward 17 Davenport councillor attended the teen’s birthday party.
Investigators said there was no reason to suspect Valencia-Russo, who was also known as Connie, was involved in any criminal activity.
Police interviewed Valencia-Russo’s ex-husband, Alex Carrillio Baquero, who neighbours said was from Ecuador.
Neither he nor Palacio are suspects, said Det. Rick Ramjattan.
