Barbs add spice to forum

Barbs took centre stage at yesterday’s mayoral forum — and one of them didn’t even show up.

An otherwise lackluster mayoral forum was spiced up by the absence of high-profile candidate Barb Higgins, who had commitments to Indiafest and Expo Latino, and the public way her no-show was handled.

Forum organizer Brian Lee described to the crowd a Facebook conversation with Higgins’ campaign manager Donn Lovett indicating her unavailability.

Lee told the 326 attendees Lovett had said it was “none of your business” when asked the nature of Higgins’ commitments. Lovett has denied making the comment.

Former alderman Craig Burrows, who took square aim at Ric McIver, delivered the afternoon’s second round of barbs, calling him out during his final address.

“What Ric stands for is his track record — he talks about it,” said Burrows. “But you can’t cherry-pick decisions.”

McIver defended his record afterwards.

“It’s easy to take a half-truth and leave the other half out to make an argument, but that’s the nature of what happens sometimes with politics,” said McIver.
