Two police officers are seriously injured and a knife-wielding man is dead after shots were fired outside a busy mall located along the route to tourist-favourite Wasaga Beach.

Police say a fight erupted yesterday around 10:30 a.m. when two officers responded to a trouble call outside Bayfield Mall in Barrie, one hour north of Toronto.

“During the call there was an altercation and both of the officers on scene were stabbed with a knife and one person was shot and killed,” said Barrie police Const. John Parliament.

Witnesses told the Barrie Examiner they believed one officer was stabbed in the neck and the other in the arm before the pair chased down the suspect and opened fire.

All three men were rushed to an area hospital, where one officer was believed to have undergone surgery.

“The injuries were serious in nature but obviously we hope for the best,” said Parliament.

He did not provide further details as members of the provincial Special Investigations Unit, attended the scene.
