A black bear that wandered through the Kootenay city of Nelson may be a nuisance, but it’s not a killer, authorities said yesterday.

Conservation officer Len Butler said Nelson City Police were wrong to say the bruin attacked and killed a tethered golden retriever during a backyard confrontation.

Butler said the elderly pet likely died of a heart attack when the bear wandered through the yard last weekend.

He said while there was no attack, the bear may have played a role in the dog’s death because the dog could have been spooked.
