Provincial police are urging those giving to the Haitian relief effort to do it safely.

A release issued yesterday by the Nova Scotia RCMP said there are “scammers” looking to take advantage of the Haiti situation, so exercising caution when donating is paramount.

“We certainly don’t want to discourage anyone from making donations, we just want people to be aware of individuals with criminal intent to solicit contributions,” Insp. Jim MacDougall, officer in charge of financial crime, said in the release.

“Canadians need ... to make sure their money goes to competent relief organizations.”

Safety tips include asking the solicitor for the registered charitable tax number of the charity and refusing high-pressure appeals.
