A bicyclist fell into the Rideau Canal Thursday night after swerving to avoid a pedestrian, Ottawa police say.

At about 9:30 p.m. the 42-year-old woman was on the path under the Heron Road bridge when she had to swerve.

Police say the rider and her bike went over the rail and into the canal.

The cyclist
had to swim until a passerby heard her yelling and called
911.

“The section of canal where she fell in had no area for her to
climb out, with walls on both sides,” Superintendent Daniel
Kennedy said, “forcing her to tread water until she was helped out."

She
was not suffering from any major injuries but was exhausted and cold
after being in the water for about 20 minutes.
