Big birthday bash aims to help ALS Society

Most birthday parties don’t have six bands, film screenings, silent auctions, merchandise booths and a catchy name.

Mark Hopkins, 26, is not throwing the Markapalooza just for himself on Saturday. All proceeds raised will go to the ALS Society of Alberta.

“People have different ways of dealing with the death of a loved one. My way is to be really active and public.”
Hopkins is fundraising in memory of family members who died from the disease, his great-uncle before he was born, his uncle in 2001 and his father in 2007.

Hopkins has a 50 per cent chance of getting ALS, which has no cure or treatment. Hopkins is hoping to Markapalooza 2 is bigger than the first.

“It’s going to be a rocking party,” said Hopkins. “Last year’s was ridiculously off the hook.”
