Big break lands rockers opening gig for Bon Jovi

While they may be used to playing at local pubs, Calgary-based band Zoo Lion is about to perform on a much larger stage.

Before Bon Jovi’s performance at the Saddledome tomorrow, the four men of Zoo Lion will be warming up the crowd after winning CJAY 92’s contest to open for the famous rockers.

“We were completely blown away,” said lead vocalist and guitarist Craig Aikman. “To go from playing one week at Loco Lou’s on 16th Avenue to the Saddledome, we were freaking out.”

Aikman said they uploaded two of their songs onto the contest’s Facebook group, and about two weeks ago they found out that they had been picked out of a group of about 300 artists.

Bass player Matt Tysowski said they are just trying to keep calm and not let nerves get to them.

“When it comes down to it, it’s just another show and we’ve got to do our best,” he said.

Zoo Lion will be performing a 30-minute set for the sold-out show. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m.
