Big weekend ahead for Nova Scotia paddlers

Eight Nova Scotians hit the water again this weekend in the hopes of taking another step toward qualifying for August’s world sprint canoe-kayak championships in Dartmouth.

Olympians Andrew Russell of Dartmouth, Karen Furneaux of Waverley and Jillian D’Alessio of Middle Sackville lead the Bluenose contingent into the final World Cup event in Szeged, Hungary, on Saturday and Sunday.

Also competing is Lake Echo’s Genevieve Orton, who won silver at last month’s World Cup in Poland. The other Nova Scotians are Connor Taras and Shaun Fair of Waverley, Lyall Hatton of Bedford and Una Lounder of Dartmouth.

The next stage of world qualifying comes with two sets of national team trials later this month and in July.
