Bike commutes up 12 per cent in city: Report

Vancouver saw a 12 per cent increase in the number of commuters riding bikes to work, says a report that will come before council tomorrow.

Citywide, 3.7 per cent of trips to work were made on bicycle in 2006, up from 3.3 per cent a decade earlier.

The number is higher than other major Canadian centres, with the exception of Victoria, where 5.6 per cent of trips to work were made by bicycle.

Almost 12 per cent of commuters in Point Grey, Kitsilano and South Cambie cycled to work.

Grandview-Woodlands also exceeded 11 per cent.

The report mentions that efforts to increase cycling outside of the city core will have more impact on the number of bicycle commuters.
