As part of the Bank Street rehabilitation project, the city has commissioned a series of new artist-designed bike racks on the streets between Laurier Avenue and Somerset Street.
The 30 stainless steel bike racks — designed by emerging and established Ottawa artists to showcase the unique identity and character of the neighbourhood — encourages cycling and movement up and down the street.
The first piece heading south on Bank Street is Howie Tsui’s log-driver based on the National Film Board animated short.
“It’s a reference to the history of Ottawa as a logging town before it became a government town,” he said.
“It makes connections to the Ottawa River and the canal as well.”
Each design will be produced three times for a total of 90 racks, which will be installed from Laurier Avenue to the Queensway by late fall.
