Bikers race toward $60,000 prize

A unique mountain bike race that will offer the biggest purse prize in North America is coming to B.C.

The five-day Intermontane Challenge will take place in Kamloops in June 2009. Racers will cover 450 kilometres on a single-track, clover-shaped course — the only one of its kind in the world.

Chuck Brennan, race organizer and creator, said the course’s design allows the start and finish of every stage of the race to be seen from one central location.

“On these point-to-point races, it’s a logistic nightmare to move,” he said. “You’re moving an entire camp and you start thinking, ‘Holy cow, that’s a lot of gas.’”

The purse is $60,000 — three times more than any other race in North America.
