Blaze destroys upscale home

A lavish south-side home was reduced to smouldering rubble yesterday, after an early-morning fire destroyed it and its multimillion-dollar contents.

The owner of the Blackmud Creek home at 107 Street and 5 Avenue SW was awoken by the sound of breaking glass just before 5 a.m., fire investigators said.

The man and his dog rushed to a neighbour’s home as flames engulfed the 11,000-square-foot structure.

Fire crews were still dousing smouldering hot spots at 11 a.m. yesterday, and investigators remained on scene most of the day. Damages are pegged at $6 million. The home reportedly contained a number of million-dollar pieces of art and a priceless wine cellar.

Investigators haven’t determined how the blaze began, though preliminary reports suggest it may have begun in the ravine below and spread to the property.
