The only promise that Robin Lawrance will make to voters in Ottawa is that he will do his best for the city if he is elected mayor.
“Doing your best is much more practical than to keep making promises,” said Lawrance.
He says he decided to run because he said there is a lack of leadership coming out of the mayor’s office.
If elected, Lawrance would try his best to freeze taxes for the first two years of the term. After that, he would only increase taxes if it was necessary. A tax freeze, he said, could be accomplished by not “coming up with stupid ideas.”
Lawrance is opposed to a Lansdowne Park deal because the city is not getting enough money up front.
When it comes to transit, Lawrance says he’d prefer that the light rail transit system be built along existing rail lines.
He says the downtown Ottawa transit tunnel is a “stupid idea” because there are not enough people to justify the tunnel, he said. He would rather see a fully regional transit system with trips out to the Ottawa valley and surrounding areas.
And, he’s concerned with the possibility of an earthquake caused by digging the downtown Ottawa Transit Tunnel.
