Body found in water off Granville Island

Tourists and Granville Island regulars witnessed a gruesome scene yesterday.

Michele Becker looked out the window of her Granville Island art gallery office yesterday just before noon to see a body floating face-down in False Creek.

She immediately called police, who said that an autopsy is needed to confirm the man’s identity and cause of death.

Russell Ko, a ferry driver, told Metro “this is the second, if not the third body we’ve heard of being found around here” in his six years working with False Creek Ferries.

At noon yesterday he saw a police boat “coming down at high speed” to investigate the water near Pier 32, close to Emily Carr University.

“It’s sobering,” Becker said of her discovery. “It reminds us how fragile each and every one of us is.”
