Officers went on holiday, family says

The body of Philip Richardson sat unclaimed in a Toronto morgue for two weeks because the police officers in charge of notifying next-of-kin went on vacation, according to his family.

Richardson’s sister, Julie, is angry.

The delay in learning of his death made the shock of losing her 46-year-old brother to a massive heart attack that much worse, she said.

He died July 4 and was found in his bed by the cleaning lady.

“The detectives both admitted to me that (his case) fell through the cracks,” Julie Richardson said.

The body was identified when the detective in charge of sudden deaths in downtown 51 Division asked the morgue attendant about it. Fingerprints led him to Philip’s brother-in-law, a police officer who works in the Beach.
