Bomb destroys Jeep in Squamish neighbourhood

In what appears to be a botched hit attempt, a parked Jeep in a suburban Squamish neighbourhood was destroyed on Saturday night by an improvised explosive device, Mounties said.

The detonation, which occurred just before midnight, completely destroyed the vehicle but failed to injure anyone, local RCMP report.

No other explosive materials were found in the vicinity, though at least one nearby home was evacuated out of safety concerns.

In a press release, Cpl. Dave Ritchie said that the destroyed vehicle’s owner was “known to police” and is believed to be the intended victim of the attack.

Homemade improvised explosive devices have gained infamy as a weapon used by militants in Afghanistan and Iraq, due to their ability to penetrate the hulls of heavily armoured vehicles.
