Bones bombshell stirs things up on hit show

Despite a martial arts background, actress Katheryn Winnick says she won’t be engaging in any small screen fisticuffs with Bones star Emily Deschanel. Well, maybe not.

“No, I don’t think there’s a cat fight,” says the Toronto-born actress, who plays the new romantic rival on the crime drama.

“Still, I feel Brennan (Deschanel) can’t help but probably feel a little bit of tension at who’s this new girl?”

The “new girl” is Hannah (Winnick), an Afghanistan war correspondent and girlfriend to Booth (David Boreanaz). Their romance intrudes on the on-again-off-again relationship between Booth and Brennan that has formed the basis of the long-running series.

“I don’t know if she (Hannah) knows the details of their relationship and what happened last season. I think it would be more interesting to kind of discover that,” says Winnick, whose credits include the films Failure To Launch and Killers.

Winnick sees some parallels between her Bones character and herself. “Being work-driven. Being ambitious. Always wanting more out of life,” she says.

“I’m not one to sit around and let things happen to me. I’ve had the experience of starting my own martial arts school at the age of 16. I had a big career and passion before I got involved in acting.”

Bones fans, needless to say, are in a bit of an uproar over the arrival of Hannah, who has been dubbed the “Bones Bombshell.” They see the new character as a threat to the much-teased Booth/Brennan romance.

“I’d heard that it was causing a stir. I hope the audience will give Hannah a chance and realize that she’s not there to be part of a love triangle or to create a cat fight or high school drama.”
Still, a cat fight might be cool too.

Bones airs Thursdays on Global.
